Application Description

This bilingual dictionary bridges Western Tamang and Nepali, two languages with intertwined histories. Tamang, a Tibeto-Burman language, boasts the fifth-largest number of speakers in Nepal (5.1% of the population according to the 2011 census). While predominantly spoken around the Kathmandu Valley, Tamang communities are spread throughout Nepal. Recognized as an indigenous language in Nepal's 2058 VS constitution and further prioritized in subsequent constitutions, its cultural significance is undeniable.

Oral traditions, such as the ‘Do:ra song’, trace Western Tamang origins to Tibet, with early settlements in the Himalayan region. Unique funerary practices, reflecting a cosmology viewing the earth's "tail" as north and its "head" as south, further distinguish Tamang culture.

Western Tamang, distinct from Eastern Tamang (spoken east of the Trisuli River), is spoken across several Nepali districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Chitawan, and Kanchanpur. This dictionary, compiled by Western Tamang speakers from these regions, provides Nepali translations for Western Tamang vocabulary. Its purpose is to facilitate comparative linguistic study and, critically, to combat the decline of Western Tamang due to the increasing dominance of Nepali.

This dictionary represents a vital tool for the preservation and promotion of Western Tamang. The authors welcome feedback and suggestions for future improvements and expansions. The latest version (1.7, updated September 29, 2024) includes an updated Android SDK (July 30, 2024).
