Life By You's Cancellation Was A Mistake Says Paradox Interactive's CEO

Paradox Interactive faced a complex situation, characterized by successes and setbacks this year. Its CEO, Fredrik Wester, frankly acknowledged some poor decisions at the company’s recent financial earnings report on July 25 following Life by You’s cancellation.

Wester disclosed that despite the company’s robust financial performance driven by existing games, such as Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis, it experienced substantial challenges. "It is clear that we have made incorrect choices in several projects, particularly outside of our core," he stated. "Our core business has performed exceptionally well, but conversely, we made the tough decision to cancel the release of Life by You."

The development of its now-canceled life simulation game Life by You, a potential Sims competitor, marked Paradox's departure from its typical strategy game releases. Though the game displayed potential and the company already invested nearly $20 million in its development, they ultimately halted its release last June 17. Wester stated that the game did not "meet our standards."

Beyond this game development setback, Paradox Interactive also encountered difficulties with their recent releases. The much-anticipated Cities: Skylines 2 was hampered by performance problems, and Prison Architect 2 also experienced repeated postponements despite achieving certification across all platforms. These difficulties compounded the problems Paradox faced this year, underscoring the need to re-evaluate their game development approaches.

Reflecting on the second quarter's results, Wester emphasized the company’s strength in its flagship games such as Crusader Kings and Stellaris. "Amid the justified self-critique, it is important to remember that we have a strong base because the core of our business is performing well." By acknowledging their errors and concentrating on its core games, Paradox Interactive intends to reiterate its dedication to providing enjoyable and high-quality games for its players.
