Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, has fostered significant player engagement. However, Ishizaki explained to IGN Japan that this system would clash with Nightreign's intended shorter, more intense gameplay experience.
Preserving Asynchronous Features
While the messaging system is absent, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic returns, allowing players to observe and even loot the ghosts of fallen comrades, providing a more visceral and engaging shared experience.
A Compressed RPG Experience
FromSoftware aims to create a "compressed RPG" with Nightreign, prioritizing consistent intensity and multiplayer interaction. The game's three-day structure reflects this goal, minimizing downtime and maximizing the action. This focus on a streamlined, high-impact experience is the driving force behind the omission of the messaging system.
Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, as announced during The Game Awards 2024, though a specific release date remains unconfirmed.
