Ken Levine reflects on the unexpected closure of Irrational Games after the success of BioShock Infinite, calling the decision "complicated." He reveals the studio's shutdown surprised most, including himself: "I thought they were going to continue. But it wasn’t my company."
Irrational Games, co-founded by Levine, Chey, and Fermier, was renowned for titles like System Shock 2 and the BioShock series. Levine's personal struggles during BioShock Infinite's development led to his departure, but he hoped the studio would persevere. He admits, "I don’t think I was in any state to be a good leader." The studio's closure followed Levine's 2014 announcement, later becoming Ghost Story Games in 2017 under Take-Two.
This closure comes amidst a challenging period for the video game industry, marked by significant layoffs at companies like Riot Games and Ubisoft.
In an interview with Edge Magazine (via PC Gamer), Levine discusses his efforts to minimize the impact of the layoffs, providing transition packages and support for the Irrational team. He also reflects on the potential for Irrational to have tackled a BioShock remake, suggesting it "would have been a good title for Irrational to get their head around."
The anticipation for BioShock 4 is high. Announced five years ago, its release date remains unconfirmed, but fan speculation points towards an open-world setting while maintaining the first-person perspective of previous installments. Many believe BioShock 4 can learn from the experiences surrounding BioShock Infinite's release.
