By JackMar 01,2025

Twenty years after the original Ōkami captivated players, Amaterasu, the sun goddess and source of all goodness, makes a surprising return in a highly anticipated sequel. Revealed at The Game Awards, this new adventure is being developed by Hideki Kamiya's newly formed studio, Clovers, with Capcom publishing and Machine Head Works, a studio comprised of Capcom veterans, providing support. This collaboration unites seasoned developers from the original Ōkami with fresh talent, promising a stellar team dedicated to fulfilling the original vision.

While initial details were scarce, IGN recently conducted an extensive interview with director Hideki Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata in Osaka, Japan. The interview delved into the sequel's origins, the studio's partnerships, and the team's creative philosophies.

The interview revealed that the desire for an Ōkami sequel existed within Capcom for years, fueled by the enduring popularity of the original game. Kamiya, having left PlatinumGames to pursue his own creative vision, saw this as the perfect opportunity to finally complete the story he had envisioned nearly two decades prior. Machine Head Works plays a crucial role, bridging the gap between Clovers and Capcom, leveraging their experience with the RE Engine and the Ōkami franchise. The RE Engine was chosen for its ability to realize Kamiya's artistic ambitions, exceeding the technical limitations of the PS2 era.

The sequel will directly continue the story of the original Ōkami, featuring Amaterasu as the protagonist. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the team emphasized a focus on refining the gameplay experience, incorporating modern control schemes while retaining the essence of the original. The developers acknowledged the challenge of balancing nostalgia with modern expectations, aiming to create a game enjoyable for both veteran fans and newcomers alike.

The interview also touched upon the team's inspirations, ranging from Takarazuka stage shows (Kamiya), Gekidan Shiki theatre (Sakata), and the Gundam GQuuuuuuX movie (Hirabayashi). They highlighted the importance of creating a game that allows for diverse player experiences, mirroring the unpredictable nature of live performances.

The team concluded with a message of gratitude to the fans and a promise to deliver a sequel that meets, and hopefully exceeds, expectations. While acknowledging the inevitable wait, they assured fans that the project is in capable hands and progressing steadily.
