Bayonetta Veteran Signs with Housemarque

PlatinumGames Loses Another Key Developer to Housemarque

PlatinumGames, the studio behind the Bayonetta series, has experienced a significant loss with the departure of Abebe Tinari, director of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. Tinari has joined Housemarque, the developer of Returnal, in a lead game designer role. This follows the earlier departure of Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Bayonetta, adding to concerns about PlatinumGames' current trajectory.

Kamiya's September 2023 exit, citing creative differences with the studio's direction, sparked initial worry. His subsequent announcement as the lead developer for Capcom's Okami sequel at The Game Awards 2024, reviving Clover Studio, further fueled speculation about PlatinumGames' future. This was compounded by rumors of additional high-profile departures, with several developers removing all mentions of PlatinumGames from their social media.

Tinari's move to Housemarque in Helsinki, Finland, was confirmed via his LinkedIn profile. He'll likely contribute to Housemarque's currently unannounced new IP, a project the studio has been developing since the release of Returnal in 2021. An official reveal of this new game isn't expected before 2026.

The impact of these departures on PlatinumGames remains uncertain. While the studio is celebrating Bayonetta's 15th anniversary with a year-long event, potentially including a new game announcement, the future of Project GG, a new IP in development since 2020 under Kamiya's direction, is now unclear. The departure of key personnel raises questions about potential delays or changes to this highly anticipated title.
