Xbox Series X/S Sales Underperform, but Microsoft Remains Unfazed

November 2024 sales figures reveal that the Xbox Series X/S consoles significantly underperformed compared to the previous generation, with only 767,118 units sold. This contrasts sharply with the PS5's 4,120,898 units and the Switch's 1,715,636 units sold during the same period. Even compared to the Xbox One's performance in its fourth year (approximately 2.3 million units), the Series X/S lags considerably. These figures corroborate previous reports indicating declining Xbox console sales.

Microsoft's strategy of releasing first-party titles on competing platforms likely contributes to the lower sales. While the company clarifies that only select games will be cross-platform, many gamers perceive less incentive to own an Xbox Series X/S when key titles are available on PlayStation or Switch. The infrequent release of exclusive first-party titles on Xbox further reinforces this perception.

Microsoft's Long-Term Vision:

Despite the underwhelming sales figures, Microsoft maintains a positive outlook. The company openly acknowledges losing the console sales battle, but emphasizes its commitment to creating exceptional games and expanding its digital ecosystem, particularly Xbox Game Pass. The substantial and growing subscriber base of Xbox Game Pass, combined with a robust game release schedule, positions Microsoft for continued success in the gaming industry, even without dominating console sales. The potential future release of more exclusive titles on other platforms suggests a strategic shift away from hardware focus. Microsoft's next steps regarding console production, digital gaming, and software development remain to be seen.
