Application Description

Collision Investigators' Essential Tool: EDR "Black Box" Scan and Report Generation

Investigating vehicle collisions requires thorough data analysis. The CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, efficiently scans vehicle computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR) or "black box" where supported (see support details below). This aids investigators in identifying, extracting, and interpreting pre-crash data. This information is invaluable for verifying insurance claims and providing crucial insights into liability or questionable accident claims.

Vehicle Compatibility:

(EDR & Full System Diagnostics)

CrashScan supports over 3000 unique vehicle year/make/model combinations globally. Verify compatibility here:

Detailed Accident Reports:

Successful CrashScan reports detail impact severity, direction (front, rear, side), and provide crucial context, including:

  • Accident severity classification (minor, moderate, severe)
  • EDR trigger threshold information
  • 5 seconds of pre-crash data: speed, brake/accelerator pedal usage, and steering input
  • Vehicle occupancy and seatbelt usage
  • Estimated repair cost ($)
  • Likelihood of structural damage
  • Injury risk assessment (whiplash, injury duration)
  • Contextual g-force comparisons to daily activities

*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration data, peer-reviewed research, and databases such as the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

App Resources:

EDR Data and Privacy Legislation:

  • Canada: Currently lacks specific legislation; data is considered diagnostic and not "private." However, obtaining consent from the vehicle owner is best practice among insurers.
  • United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, along with seventeen state statutes (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington), govern EDR data access. Generally, consent from the vehicle owner or policyholder is required, with specific exceptions.

End-User Consent:

Downloading the CrashScan app (published by Collision Sciences, Inc.) signifies consent to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices as outlined in our privacy statement. Consent can be withdrawn at any time by uninstalling the app. The app may automatically communicate with Collision Sciences' servers for functionality and usage metric recording, and may affect app-related preferences and data on your device.
