Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics ($49.99)

A nostalgic trip back to the 90s for fighting game and Marvel/Capcom fans! This collection brings together a stellar lineup of classic arcade titles, starting with the groundbreaking X-Men: Children of the Atom and culminating in the iconic Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The progression of the series is a testament to Capcom's innovation, showcasing increasingly ambitious crossovers and over-the-top action. The inclusion of Punisher, a beloved beat 'em up, adds even more value to this already impressive package.

Developed with a similar approach to the Capcom Fighting Collection, this release boasts many of the same features, including visual filters, gameplay options, and a robust online multiplayer experience with rollback netcode. However, it unfortunately inherits the single save state limitation, which proves particularly inconvenient for the included beat 'em up. Despite this minor drawback, the collection shines with its extensive art gallery and music player. The impressive NAOMI hardware emulation ensures that Marvel vs. Capcom 2, in particular, looks and plays exceptionally well.

While the focus remains on the arcade versions, the omission of home console releases (like the PlayStation EX versions or the feature-rich Dreamcast version of MvC2) is a missed opportunity. Similarly, the absence of Capcom's Super NES Marvel titles, despite their imperfections, feels like a slight oversight. However, the title's accurate description as "Arcade Classics" justifies this choice.

This collection is a must-have for Marvel and fighting game enthusiasts. The excellent game selection, meticulous preservation, and generous extras make it a highly enjoyable experience. The single save state is a significant drawback, but overall, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is a fantastic compilation that plays flawlessly on the Switch.

Yars Rising ($29.99)

A Metroidvania take on the classic Yars' Revenge? Initially, the concept seemed questionable. However, WayForward delivers a surprisingly solid title. The game boasts excellent visuals and audio, smooth gameplay, and well-designed level layouts. While the boss battles occasionally overstay their welcome, this is a minor criticism in an otherwise enjoyable experience.

WayForward cleverly integrates elements of the original game, including Yars' Revenge-style sequences and abilities that evoke the classic title. The attempt to connect this new game to the original's lore is admirable, even if it feels like a significant stretch. The game seems to cater to two distinct audiences with limited overlap, which might have been better served by a wholly original concept.

Despite its conceptual inconsistencies, Yars Rising is a fun and engaging Metroidvania. It might not redefine the genre, but it provides a satisfying experience for those seeking a weekend-long adventure. The potential for future installments could further solidify its place in the genre.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland ($24.99)

A surprisingly creative platformer inspired by Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)! While lacking personal nostalgia for the Rugrats franchise, the game's charm quickly won me over. The visuals are crisp and appealing, exceeding expectations. The initially awkward controls are easily adjustable, and the inclusion of the iconic Rugrats theme song is a nice touch.

The gameplay mechanics, however, are the true highlight. The ability to switch between characters, each with unique jump heights and abilities (reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 2's diverse character roster), adds a refreshing layer of strategy. The inclusion of puzzles, item collection, and varied level design keeps the gameplay engaging.

The game even offers the option to switch between modern and 8-bit visuals and soundtracks, adding replayability. The boss battles are well-designed and challenging. The only drawbacks are its relatively short length and the absence of voice acting in the cutscenes.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is a delightful surprise. It's a well-executed platformer that cleverly utilizes the Rugrats license and pays homage to a classic game. While brief, it's a worthwhile experience for platformer fans and Rugrats enthusiasts alike. The multiplayer mode adds further value.
