A recently published patent hints at exciting new features for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, including potential mouse support. Read on to discover more about these innovative controller functions and the official date for the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
Switch 2: Joy-Con Innovation
Mouse Support Confirmed?
A February 6, 2025, publication by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) details a Nintendo patent for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, revealing intriguing functionalities. The patent strongly suggests mouse-like capabilities, corroborating speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which briefly showed the controller being used in a manner consistent with mouse operation. This patent offers a clearer picture than Nintendo's previously limited communication about the Switch 2.
Enhanced Joy-Con Design and New Controllers
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons appear to maintain the detachable design of their predecessors, offering familiar functionality. However, the patent highlights a significant addition: mouse functionality. The patent describes a sensor that detects reflected light from a surface, tracking movement as the Joy-Con is moved across it.
A new charging dock capable of simultaneously charging up to two Joy-Cons is also mentioned. A magnetic attachment, complete with a wrist strap, is detailed for securely connecting the Joy-Cons to the console.
Furthermore, the patent introduces a novel controller design—a split standard controller, each half equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. These halves can also be combined using a separate attachment to form a traditional controller.
It's important to note that the features detailed in this patent may not perfectly represent the final Switch 2 product. Nintendo has yet to officially comment on the Joy-Con's functionality or any related accessories.

Nintendo of America announced via Twitter (X) on February 5, 2025, that a Nintendo Direct focusing on the Switch 2 will air on April 2, 2025, at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET across all official Nintendo social media platforms.
