Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Says Writer

By MichaelApr 17,2025

Are you excited about Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Well, fans can rest easy knowing that the director of Deadpool & Wolverine is still very much involved in the project. Jonathan Tropper, the film's writer, recently shared some reassuring news with Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm: "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While the movie remains largely shrouded in mystery, one key detail has been revealed: it is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed this during a February interview with Deadline, stating, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This timeline makes Levy's film the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

Kennedy also noted that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Another exciting detail is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film.

With Jonathan Tropper's optimistic update, it seems things are moving forward for Levy's project. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the film is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

Since the release of the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has not released a new Star Wars film. During this period, several other projects were canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a significant focus for Disney, with reports indicating she will appear in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

Disney's Star Wars slate is not limited to these projects. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch, promising an immersive continuation of the beloved series.
