Pokémon TCG Pocket Has No Plans To Go Competitive

The Pokémon Company has confirmed it currently has no plans to integrate Pokémon TCG Pocket into its competitive esports circuit. This decision, revealed by Chris Brown, Director of eSports, in a recent VGC interview (February 25, 2025), doesn't preclude future consideration, but for now, Pokémon TCG Pocket remains outside the competitive arena. Brown humorously referenced the previously released April Fool's joke about a Pokémon Sleep championship, highlighting the company's playful approach while emphasizing the lack of current plans for Pocket's inclusion.

While no official reasons have been given, several fan theories exist. The game's relative youth (launched October 2024), with only four months and two sets under its belt, suggests it may be too early for competitive viability. Although in-app competitive features are present, ongoing balancing issues remain a concern. Furthermore, Pokémon TCG Pocket's simplified gameplay, designed for a broader, more casual audience, contrasts with the strategic depth expected in competitive play.

Despite this, the Pokémon Competitive Circuit remains robust, featuring Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokémon Unite, all set to be showcased at the upcoming Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, California, August 2025. The upcoming Pokémon Presents (February 27, 2025, 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET) could offer new information. While the agenda remains unannounced, speculation is high regarding potential reveals, including a new set for Pokémon TCG Pocket (following the January 30, 2025 release of Space Time Smackdown). The event might also shed light on previously announced titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A and recently announced mega evolutions. The livestream will be broadcast on YouTube and Twitch.
