Insider: MultiVersus is on the verge of shutting down: Warner Bros. fighting game lost 99% of its players

Rumors swirl that Season 5 of MultiVersus could be its last. Insider AusilMV, known for accurate game leaks, cites a reliable source suggesting the season is a final attempt to revive the struggling title. While currently just speculation, the game's dwindling player base paints a concerning picture.

The game's initial 2022 launch saw explosive success, peaking at 153,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, a dramatic 99% player drop led Warner Bros. Games to shut down the project in June 2023, framing it as an "open beta test." A relaunch with updates followed in May 2024, but failed to recapture its former popularity.

Launching in early February, Season 5 represents a critical juncture for MultiVersus. This relaunched version, despite being marketed as such, followed an initial release in 2022 that was unexpectedly popular. However, the developers' March 2023 announcement of a temporary June shutdown, particularly upsetting to those who purchased the premium edition, significantly impacted player trust and contributed to the game's decline. The success or failure of Season 5 may ultimately determine the game's fate.
