"Avowed: The Spiritual Successor to Morrowind Unveiled"

By MichaelApr 20,2025

Avowed may not be a groundbreaking title, but it certainly captivates those who revel in the joy of exploration. This delightful RPG echoes the spirit of Morrowind, the legendary game that set the bar for immersive digital worlds well before today's standards were established. In Morrowind, every element of the landscape promised adventure, from rocks and bushes to mountains and ocean floors. Obsidian Entertainment has boldly taken up the mantle to recreate this sense of discovery, and they have done so with remarkable success.

The World of Pillars of Eternity

Set within the expansive universe of Pillars of Eternity, Avowed welcomes players into a meticulously crafted world that doesn't necessitate prior knowledge of the series. While familiarity with the previous games can enrich your experience, the narrative unfolds seamlessly through in-game conversations and environmental storytelling.

The storyline centers on an emissary appointed by the Emperor of Aedyr, tasked with investigating a mysterious fungal plague in the Living Lands, which is causing souls to go mad. In this universe, souls cycle through life, death, and reincarnation. The protagonist, touched by a god at birth—albeit an unknown one—bears unique growths resembling plants or fungi on their head, which sometimes incites fear in others.

A Chaotic Welcome to Paradise

Upon reaching the Living Lands, the protagonist is thrust into chaos as their ship is assaulted by deranged Aedyran guards. Arriving at the port city ironically named Paradise, they find it in disarray with absent high-ranking officials and closed gates—a classic RPG scenario.

The thrill of exploration is immediate. Diving into the sea near the port, I discovered sunken treasures while narrowly escaping drowning. Venturing further, I stumbled upon a smuggler's camp, overheard their plans, and barely escaped after being spotted. Returning to the port, I eagerly picked up quests and delved into every corner of the environment.

Treasures Beneath Every Stone

One unforgettable moment was breaking into a locked house, looting its contents, and climbing scaffolding to reach a lighthouse. At the summit, I found a treasure map, rare yellow-tier boots with a fascinating backstory, and stunning vistas. As night fell, the glowing mushrooms illuminated new paths and secrets.

Every nook of the game world teems with surprises. In the sewers beneath the lighthouse, a chest awaits discovery under spiderwebs that need to be burned away. Nearby, perched on beams, a nest holds coins. A backpack brimming with goodies hangs off a cliff edge, while below, a skeleton basks in the sunlight. Even tossing an ice grenade into the water allows temporary retrieval of submerged loot.

Stories Waiting to Be Discovered

Such moments of discovery abound throughout Avowed. Supplies can be found unexpectedly on rooftops, behind waterfalls, and atop hills, leading to new quests, rare relics, and intriguing scenarios. While scavenging in the slums, I broke into a shack and met a blind man and his grieving wife, threatened by mercenaries. Another quest involved retrieving a lost ring from a sewer, which turned out to enhance my health regeneration—a boon I decided to keep.

Another poignant encounter involved discovering two lovers who had died together, near a lift leading to the northern outskirts where guards inspected a dead smuggler. Following this trail, I battled through a reptilian camp and confronted a formidable giant, testing my combat prowess and gear.

Endless Possibilities and Exploration

In just eight hours of playtime, I embarked on numerous adventures without touching the main questline or engaging in repetitive grinding. My focus was on exploring, experimenting with various character builds, and understanding item interactions. Whether wielding a shield and staff or donning heavy armor with melee weapons, each decision opened up new avenues of play.

With many questions yet unanswered and numerous systems still to explore, my journey in Avowed is far from complete. A path of hidden chests, untold stories, and forgotten treasures awaits. For now, the game provides an endless stream of discoveries, reaffirming why RPGs remain one of the most enthralling genres in gaming.
