The Witcher 4: everything we know so far

The Witcher saga continues! Nearly a decade after the critically acclaimed The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red has unveiled the first trailer for The Witcher 4, starring Ciri as the protagonist.

As many fans will remember, Ciri is Geralt's adopted daughter. With Geralt's trilogy concluded, the spotlight shifts to the next generation. The trailer depicts Ciri intervening in a village gripped by superstition, where a young woman is about to be sacrificed to a monster. Ciri's attempt to rescue the woman reveals a far more complex and dangerous situation.

An official release date remains elusive. Considering the development timelines of The Witcher 3 (3.5-4 years) and Cyberpunk 2077 (even longer), and the early stage of The Witcher 4's production, a release within the next three to four years seems plausible, at the earliest.

While no platforms have been confirmed, given the projected timeframe, a current-generation-only release is likely. However, no platform exclusivity has been declared. We expect simultaneous launches on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A Switch port, unlike The Witcher 3, seems improbable for this iteration, though a potential Switch 2 release remains a possibility.

Gameplay details are scarce, but CD Projekt Red is unlikely to drastically alter the core gameplay mechanics of their flagship franchise. The CGI trailer hints at returning elements like potions, signs, and familiar phrases. A notable addition might be Ciri's chain, used both to subdue the monster and channel magic.

Voice actor Doug Cockle (Geralt) previously confirmed Geralt's presence in the game, albeit in a supporting role, not as the central figure. The trailer features Geralt's voice, fueling speculation about a mentor-like function for the veteran Witcher.
