Unveiling the Top Switch Games for Narrative Enthusiasts

By AudreyJan 25,2025

Following my exploration of the Switch's top party games in 2024, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the best visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This encompasses both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements. The selection spans various regions and release years, offering a diverse range of experiences. As always, the order is arbitrary.

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection

Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. Now, in 2024, Emio – The Smiling Man arrives as a stunning new entry, both physically and digitally. It's a lavishly produced title, a true successor to the originals (which might be a drawback for some). The plot is gripping, culminating in a shockingly good ending that fully justifies its M rating. Unexpectedly, it's become a top contender for my Game of the Year. Download the demo! If you prefer, play the original two games first via Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection. Fans of classic adventure game design will find much to love.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)

A repeat appearance on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A is a personal favorite. Its compelling narrative, memorable music, striking aesthetic, and particularly its characters make it stand out. The Switch port is excellent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, regardless of their preference for point-and-click adventures. Mix drinks, change lives.

The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)

The definitive edition of a storytelling masterpiece, The House in Fata Morgana includes the original game and significant additions. A pure visual novel, it thrives on the Switch. This gothic horror experience will leave a lasting impression, boasting some of the most exceptional music I've ever encountered.

Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)

While sold separately on the eShop, a North American Switch bundle exists, so I'm treating them as one entry. Though not reaching the heights of VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk provides a relaxing experience with a charming story, perfect pixel art, and great music. Ideal for coffee lovers who appreciate engaging characters.

Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)

This entry encompasses three titles: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night Remastered, and Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo). All are lengthy but rewarding. Fate/stay night serves as a good introduction to the genre, while Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows these two in terms of quality.

PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)

Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT is a surprising gem, boasting a captivating narrative, excellent delivery, and engaging mechanics. It features memorable characters, striking art, and is a must-play for fans of mystery adventure games.

Gnosia ($24.99)

Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia blends adventure and visual novel elements. The core gameplay involves identifying imposters and voting them into "cold sleep." Despite some RNG elements, it's a fantastic experience.

Steins;Gate Series (Variable)

Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series, especially Steins;Gate Elite, is crucial for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I hope for the original version's release, Elite is a strong recommendation for anime fans. Playing the other games is best done after experiencing the original story in Elite.

AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)

This collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes artist Yusuke Kozaki resulted in two exceptional adventure games. The quality of the story, music, and characters surpasses expectations. These are highlights of the Switch library.

NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)

An adventure game with multiple endings, NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD shifts between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. It follows a young streamer's daily life. The Switch version is highly recommended.

Ace Attorney Series (Variable)

Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch. The series is beloved for its engaging gameplay and enduring fanbase. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a great entry point.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)

The Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While the grotesque imagery might not appeal to all, the stories and localizations are excellent.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)

A blend of adventure and real-time strategy, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a sci-fi masterpiece. The Switch port is excellent, particularly in handheld mode on OLED screens. A must-play.

This list exceeds a typical "top 10," reflecting my desire to include all the games I highly recommend. If you have suggestions, please share them in the comments. I'm always seeking more exceptional stories in these genres. Thanks for reading!

Note: A separate list of otome games is in progress.
