Nintendo Switch 2: Power Up with a New Charger?
Rumors suggest the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 may require a more powerful charger than its predecessor. While leaks point to a design similar to the original Switch, a recent report indicates the new console will ship with a 60W power cord, incompatible with the original Switch's charger.
Recent leaks have offered glimpses of the Switch 2, including images seemingly confirming a similar design to the original, along with magnetic Joy-Con controllers. These unverified leaks, however, haven't stopped the anticipation building for Nintendo's official reveal, expected by March 2025.
A photo of the Switch 2's charging dock, shared by journalist Laura Kate Dale, further fuels this rumor (via VGC). The 60W requirement suggests the original Switch's charger might not provide sufficient power, potentially resulting in slower charging or inefficient operation. While charging might be possible with the older cable, a 60W cord is strongly recommended.
Charging Cable Compatibility Concerns
The buzz around the Switch 2 extends beyond the charging issue. Earlier leaks detailed development kits sent to game developers, hinting at potential titles such as a new Mario Kart and Monolith Soft's Project X Zone. Speculation on the console's graphical capabilities places it potentially on par with, or slightly below, the PlayStation 4 Pro.
While the Switch 2 will include its own charger, users should be aware of the potential incompatibility with the original Switch's power cord. Losing the Switch 2's charger might tempt users to use the older cable, but given this latest report, it's advisable to stick with the provided 60W charger for optimal performance.
