The Pokémon GO Tour Pass: A Free and Paid Option Explained
Niantic's latest Pokémon GO offering, the Tour Pass, has players asking, "How much does it cost?" The good news? The standard Tour Pass is entirely free! But what exactly does it offer, and what are the benefits of the paid Deluxe version?
Understanding the Pokémon GO Tour Pass
Introduced with the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova global event, the Tour Pass is a system of tasks and rewards. Complete tasks to earn Tour Points, unlocking rewards, boosting your rank, and enhancing event bonuses.
The free Tour Pass is automatically granted to all players at the start of the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova event (February 24th, 10 AM local time). However, a premium option, the Tour Pass Deluxe ($14.99 USD or equivalent), offers an immediate Victini encounter, superior rewards, and accelerated progression.
Earning and Utilizing Tour Points
Tour Points are earned through familiar in-game activities: catching Pokémon, participating in raids, and hatching eggs. Daily Pass Tasks provide additional points.
Accumulated Tour Points unlock rewards, increase your rank within the Tour Pass tier system, and unlock various rewards (Pokémon encounters, Candy, Poké Balls, etc.). Higher ranks also amplify your Catch XP bonus during the event:
- Tier 2: 1.5x Catch XP
- Tier 3: 2x Catch XP
- Tier 4: 3x Catch XP
While Niantic has yet to reveal all rewards, the free Tour Pass culminates in a Zorua encounter with a unique background. The Tour Pass Deluxe offers a different top-tier reward: the Lucky Trinket.
Decoding the Lucky Trinket
Exclusive to the Tour Pass Deluxe, the Lucky Trinket is a single-use item transforming a friend (at least Great Friends level) into a Lucky Friend, enabling a Lucky Pokémon trade without requiring Best Friend status. Note: Lucky Trinkets acquired during Pokémon GO Tour: Unova expire on March 9, 2025.
Pokémon GO is available now.
