Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces four major endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. This guide focuses on Expeditions, a returning mechanic from a previous league, detailing how to find them, utilize their mechanics, and maximize rewards.

Locating and Initiating Expeditions

Expedition map nodes on the Atlas are marked with a distinctive light blue, spiral-shaped icon. To guarantee an Expedition encounter, use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot.

Once in a map containing an Expedition, locate the marked area and the tent housing four NPCs. While they offer basic instructions, mastering Expedition mechanics requires further understanding.

The core of the Expedition involves strategically placing Explosives near Markers to summon Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests.

• Runic Monsters: Spawn near Red Markers; larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
• Unearthed Remnants: Relics with floating tooltips, providing beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage but higher item rarity from chests).
• Excavated Chests: Spawn near Black Markers with the spiral symbol; contain Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-end gear.

Use the Explosives UI to visualize their area of effect (AoE). Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal resource management. After placing Explosives, activate the Detonator to begin the event. Death resets the map, but you can retreat and return later.

The Expedition Pinnacle Map and Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These unlock Pinnacle Maps via Dannig in your hideout. Slot the Logbook, click "Open Portals," and enter an expanded Expedition with significantly more Explosives.

These Pinnacle Maps feature Olroth, a challenging boss (skull icon on minimap). Defeating Olroth grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, valuable currency, and exclusive unique items. The higher the map level, the greater the chance of Olroth appearing.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Accessible via the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the event. It's located in the top-right of the Atlas Skill Tree menu, distinguished by its spiraling blue design.

The tree features eight Notable nodes and eight difficulty-increasing nodes for Logbooks (and Olroth). Defeating Olroth is crucial for obtaining points to unlock these nodes. Each Notable node requires increasing the Logbook difficulty.

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward increases. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further, more challenging enhancements. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to its severe reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are the primary rewards, each used to trade with a specific vendor for particular gear types. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories.

Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, are key to progressing the Pinnacle system, leading to encounters with Olroth and his substantial rewards. Remember that higher difficulty maps increase the chance of encountering Olroth and receiving superior loot.
