Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is set to hit the big screen with a surprise movie adaptation. Universal Pictures has enlisted the talents of renowned director and producer Michael Bay, famous for his work on the Transformers franchise, to helm the project. Joining him as a producer is the talented actress Sydney Sweeney. The screenplay will be penned by Jayson Rothwell, though plot details remain under wraps and no release date has been announced yet.
On the Sega side, Toru Nakahara, who played a key role in the successful Sonic movies, will serve as a producer. Additionally, Shuji Utsumi, CEO of Sega America and Europe, will oversee the film, ensuring it stays true to the beloved franchise.
Originally launched in 1986, OutRun was a groundbreaking arcade driving game crafted by Sega's legendary developer Yu Suzuki. Over the years, it has seen multiple versions and ports, with a notable sequel released in 2003. Although the series has been relatively quiet in recent times, the last release was OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009.
Sega has been actively exploring its rich back catalogue for new projects. Fans can look forward to upcoming titles such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi. Furthermore, Sega has been pushing for adaptations of its cherished intellectual properties. The Sonic movies have been a massive hit, and an adaptation of Like a Dragon: Yakuza was released on Amazon last year. The demand for video game films is high, as evidenced by the record-breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recent release of A Minecraft Movie.
While the exact nature of the OutRun film remains a mystery, fans can speculate that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney might be envisioning a thrilling, Fast & Furious-style driving and action-packed adventure.
