Nintendo's unveiled the "Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo," a $99 interactive alarm clock designed to gently rouse you with the sounds of your favorite Nintendo games. Nintendo promises a wake-up experience that feels like stepping directly into the game world itself, thanks to game-inspired alarm sounds from franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Splatoon, with more free updates to come.
The Alarmo's unique feature? It only shuts off when you're fully out of bed. Nintendo playfully describes this as a "brief victory fanfare" – a fitting reward for conquering that morning struggle. Setting it up is easy: choose a game, select a scene, set your alarm, and let the Alarmo work its magic. While a waving hand will quiet the alarm temporarily, prolonged slumber will only increase its intensity until you finally get up and moving.
Powered by a special radio wave sensor, the Alarmo measures your distance and movement speed without the need for cameras, prioritizing user privacy. Nintendo developer Tetsuya Akama explains, "The key feature is its ability to recognize subtle movements. Unlike cameras, it doesn't record video, offering better privacy. Because it uses radio waves, it works in dark rooms and can detect movement even with obstacles, as long as the waves can pass through."
For a limited time, Nintendo Switch Online members in the US and Canada can purchase the Alarmo online through the My Nintendo Store, ahead of its general release. The Nintendo New York store will also offer in-person purchases while supplies last.
Nintendo Announces Switch Online Playtest
Applications Begin October 10!
In other news, Nintendo announced a Switch Online playtest, with applications opening October 10th at 8:00 AM PT / 11:00 AM ET and closing October 15th at 7:59 AM PT / 10:59 AM ET. This playtest focuses on a new feature for the Nintendo Switch Online service.
Up to 10,000 participants will be selected. Those outside Japan will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis, with applications closing early if the participant limit is reached. To apply, you must:
- Have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership by October 9th, 2024, 3:00 PM PDT.
- Be at least 18 years old by October 9th, 2024, 3:00 PM PDT.
- Have a Nintendo Account registered in Japan, the USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, or Spain.
The playtest itself runs from October 23rd, 2024, at 6:00 PM PT / 9:00 PM ET to November 5th, 2024, at 4:59 PM PT / 7:59 PM ET.
