Nightmare Echoes are enhanced versions of existing Echoes in Wuthering Waves, significantly impacting Resonator usage. Superior to standard Echoes, they're crucial for maximizing character potential. Acquiring them is relatively straightforward, though defeating the Overlords that drop them can be challenging depending on team strength. This guide explains Nightmare Echoes and how to obtain them.
What are Nightmare Echoes?
Nightmare Echoes are alternative variants of standard 4-cost (Overlord-class) Echoes. They feature unique active skills and offer a significant elemental damage boost, making them more valuable than regular Echoes. This passive boost allows them to replace a 3-cost Echo, enabling a 441111 Echo composition.
Importantly, Nightmare Echoes retain the same Sonata/Set effects as their standard counterparts, minimizing build adjustments.

Defeated Nightmare Echoes appear in the Echo Hunting section of your Guidebook.
Nightmare Tempest Mephis and Nightmare Crownless require completion of specific Exploration Quests:
- Tempest Mephis: "Where Wind Returns to Celestial Realms" – Begins at the Resonance Beacon south of Shores of Last Breath. Interact with the Lumiscale Construct in the northern ruins.
- Nightmare Crownless: "Ruins Where Shadows Roam" – Found in the Penitent's End Exploration Progress menu (Compass icon, top-left of the map).
