MultiVersus to Shut Down When Season 5 Concludes in May

Player First Games announced the upcoming closure of MultiVersus, its Warner Bros. platform fighter. Season 5, launching February 4th, 2025, will be the game's last, ending May 30th, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. This was revealed via a blog post on the studio's website.

The announcement confirms the discontinuation of online support after May 30th. However, Player First Games assures players that offline access to all earned and purchased content will remain available through local and training modes. The team expressed gratitude for the community's support in a heartfelt message.

Real-money transactions have ceased, but Gleamium and character tokens can still be used to acquire in-game content until the May 30th shutdown. The game will be delisted from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store concurrently.

MultiVersus' closure follows reports of its underperformance for Warner Bros. Discovery, resulting in a significant $100 million writedown, contributing to a larger $300 million total for the games sector in 2024. This financial setback, along with the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, contributed to the departure of Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad.

Despite the closure, Season 5 will include new content, notably the addition of Lola Bunny (unlockable via daily calendar) and Aquaman (available through the battle pass) as playable characters. The season will provide a final hurrah for the free-to-play title before its servers go offline. CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels previously highlighted MultiVersus' underperformance as a key factor in the company's financial results.
