Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making waves with its upcoming VR release, exclusively launching on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's debut in virtual and mixed reality gaming, a significant step for the long-running strategy series.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Statements

2K Games and Firaxis Games revealed the VR version at the Civ World Summit on February 8th, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for this new era of strategic gameplay. Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the timing, stating that Civ VII VR perfectly complements Meta's growing games portfolio and the potential of mixed reality. While Civ VII is releasing on various platforms including PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be available on PSVR2 at launch.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR introduces a unique "Command Table" interface. Players can zoom in and out, examining intricate details of their civilization, mimicking a tabletop game experience. The game supports both immersive VR and mixed reality modes, allowing seamless switching between the two. 2K describes the VR experience as being transported to a personalized museum vista, while mixed reality adapts the Command Table to the player's physical space.

The game offers single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players using Meta Quest headsets. Players can team up against AI or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games acknowledged player feedback from Civ VII's early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements to enhance intuitiveness and map readability, based on mixed Steam reviews. Future updates will include community-requested features such as team multiplayer, diverse map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is slated for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.

Release Information

Civilization VII VR is expected to launch sometime in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. A specific release date is yet to be announced.
