Nexus Mods, a popular modding website, finds itself at the center of a heated debate after removing over 500 user-submitted modifications for the game Marvel Rivals in a single month. The controversy erupted when mods replacing Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump were taken down.
The platform's owner, known as TheDarkOne, clarified the situation on Reddit, stating that both mods were removed simultaneously to prevent accusations of political bias. TheDarkOne's statement, highlighting the simultaneous removal, reads: “We removed the Biden mod on the same day as the Trump mod to avoid bias. But for some reason YouTube bloggers are silent about it.”
However, this action has not quelled the backlash. TheDarkOne revealed that the removals have resulted in a wave of online harassment, including death threats and personal attacks. "Today we receive death threats, are called pedophiles and subjected to all sorts of insults simply because someone decided to inflame this issue," TheDarkOne added.
This isn't the first time Nexus Mods has faced criticism over mod removals. A previous incident in 2022 involved the removal of a Spider-Man Remastered mod that replaced rainbow flags with American flags. At the time, the site's owners publicly defended their stance on inclusivity and their commitment to removing content that they deemed discriminatory.
TheDarkOne concluded by stating, "We're not going to waste our time on people who think this is cause for uproar."
