"Mario Kart World's Free Roam: An Open World Adventure with Friends"

By DavidApr 21,2025

During today's Mario Kart World Direct, fans were treated to an in-depth look at the game's exciting new Free Roam mode. This innovative feature allows players to explore the expansive, Forza Horizon-inspired world map of Mario Kart World, offering a break from traditional racing and a chance to engage in a broader adventure.

PlayWhile we had the chance to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we got a comprehensive view of what Free Roam mode brings to the table. In contrast to previous Mario Kart games where tracks are isolated and accessible only during races, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into a seamless open world. This means players can navigate from one track to another and enjoy the spaces in between during specific game modes.

When you're taking a break from the adrenaline of racing, Free Roam mode offers an opportunity to embark on mini-adventures. The world is dotted with hidden collectibles like coins and ? panels, though the specific benefits of gathering these items are still a mystery. Players can also encounter P-Switches, which trigger short challenges such as collecting blue coins, adding an element of surprise and engagement.

Another highlight of Free Roam mode is the ability to enter Photo Mode at any time, allowing you to capture memorable shots of your racers in various poses and angles. But the fun doesn't stop there—Free Roam isn't limited to solo play. You can team up with friends to explore the world together, participate in challenges, snap photos, or simply enjoy each other's company. The mode supports up to four players in split-screen mode on a single system, and up to eight players via local wireless play, with two players per system.

Today's Mario Kart World Direct also unveiled a host of other exciting updates, including new characters, courses, and game modes. For a complete rundown of all the announcements, be sure to check out the full coverage here.
