Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a playable Baldur's Gate 4.
A Playable Baldur's Gate 4 Put Aside
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CEO Swen Vincke shared that a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel, already in a playable state, was abandoned. While acknowledging its potential appeal to fans, Vincke explained the decision to move on from the Dungeons & Dragons IP stemmed from the team's desire to pursue fresh, original ideas. The prospect of potentially spending years iterating on a similar project proved less appealing than developing new concepts.
High Morale and New Projects
The decision to forgo BG4 and a planned BG3 expansion boosted team morale significantly, according to Vincke. The studio is now focusing on two undisclosed projects, described as their most ambitious yet.
A senior product manager, Tom Butler, confirmed that after a well-deserved break following the Game Awards 2023, the team will dedicate themselves to these new ventures.
Future Projects and Divinity Series
Larian's past experience with the Divinity series suggests a potential new entry could be in the works. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 isn't confirmed, Vincke hinted at a different, unexpected direction for the franchise.
Meanwhile, Baldur's Gate 3 players can anticipate a major patch this fall 2024, introducing mod support, cross-play, and new evil endings.
