Suikoden is back, sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, slated for release later this year. The free-to-play title marks a return for the beloved series, originally launched in 1995.
For the uninitiated, Suikoden, created by Yoshitaka Murayama and published by Konami, is a series of RPGs loosely based on the Chinese novel Water Margin. Known for its intricate political narratives, True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny, the series boasts eleven entries, the last released in 2012. Suikoden STAR LEAP represents a new chapter, a mobile game rather than a direct sequel.
What Awaits in Suikoden STAR LEAP?
While featuring an entirely new cast, Suikoden STAR LEAP retains the series’ hallmark of gathering 108 heroes. The game employs pixel art, staying true to the classic Suikoden aesthetic. See for yourself:
The story centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes. The protagonist, Hou, son of a village chief, embarks on a journey with his companions—Hisui (a servant with a mysterious past), Shirin (a childhood friend with a strong sense of justice), and Shapur (a former general turned butler)—after a devastating attack on his village. Their quest? To restore peace.
The game’s gacha mechanics have sparked mixed reactions among longtime fans eager for a traditional sequel. However, only time will tell if Suikoden STAR LEAP successfully captures the spirit of the original series.
