Jon Favreau's Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Series Coming to Disney+

By AnthonyApr 25,2025

Jon Favreau, a seasoned veteran in the realm of Disney movies, is teaming up once again with the House of Mouse to bring a beloved animated icon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to life in a new Disney+ series. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will leverage his expertise in both live-action and animation to craft this exciting project, where he will serve as both writer and producer. While further details such as the plot and casting remain under wraps, the anticipation for this series is already building.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit holds a special place in Disney's vast universe of animated characters, despite his brief tenure with the company. Conceived by Walt Disney himself, Oswald starred in only 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928 before a rights dispute led to Universal taking control. As detailed in our in-depth look at Disney’s 100-year history, this setback paved the way for the creation of Mickey Mouse. Disney eventually regained the rights to Oswald in 2006, and in 2022, released its first new original short starring the character in 95 years. Now, with Favreau's involvement, Disney aims to revive Oswald beyond mere nostalgia.

Although a specific release date for Favreau's Oswald series has not been disclosed, fans can look forward to this innovative blend of live-action and animation in the near future. Meanwhile, Favreau has been deeply engaged with Disney's newer franchises, notably contributing to the Star Wars universe through projects like The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. His involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe spans 15 years, including directing the 2019 The Lion King remake. Fans will see him return to directing with The Mandalorian and Grogu, set to hit theaters in 2026.

Oswald's return to the spotlight is timely, as just last year, the character entered the public domain. In 2023, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror movie featuring the Lucky Rabbit and starring Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson, was announced, showcasing the continued relevance and versatility of this classic character.
