Jar of Sparks, NetEase's Studio, Pauses First Game Project; Seeks New Publisher
Jerry Hook, former Halo Infinite design lead, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, a NetEase subsidiary, has temporarily halted development on its debut game project. Hook, who left 343 Industries and Microsoft in 2022 to establish Jar of Sparks, described the project as a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." The studio's recent silence indicated potential challenges, culminating in the announcement of a search for a new publishing partner to realize their creative vision.
NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles including Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch and upcoming Season 1 Battle Pass, along with the anticipated arrival of the Fantastic Four in January 2025, highlight NetEase's commitment to its existing projects.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the studio's pursuit of a publishing partner capable of supporting their ambitious goals. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work, noting they had "taken bold risks and pushed boundaries."
While layoffs weren't explicitly mentioned, Hook indicated the team will be exploring new opportunities and assisting members in finding new roles as the project concludes. This mirrors a similar situation with GPTRACK50 Studios, another NetEase-backed studio founded by a veteran game developer (Hiroyuki Kobayashi, formerly of Capcom).
The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, marked by challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential resurgence for the franchise. Jar of Sparks' temporary pause provides a contrast to this ongoing evolution.
