Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist
The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades, both aesthetically and in its core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart. While a release date hasn't been officially announced (currently slated for early 2025 on PC), a free Steam demo allows players to experience the game firsthand.
The roguelike genre's recent surge in popularity has led to a wave of innovative titles, ranging from action-packed shooters like Returnal to classic dungeon crawlers reminiscent of Hades and its early access sequel. Rogue Loops firmly falls into the latter category, offering a repeating dungeon with randomized loot and ability upgrades in a top-down perspective.
Though comparisons to Hades are inevitable given its Steam trailer and demo, Rogue Loops' distinguishing feature is its ability upgrade system. Each upgrade comes with a distinct downside, significantly impacting gameplay.
This mechanic shares similarities with Hades' Chaos Gates, which provide powerful buffs at the cost of detrimental effects. However, in Rogue Loops, these "curses" are more pronounced and varied, potentially impacting the entire playthrough.
The game's narrative centers around a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players must navigate five floors of increasingly challenging dungeons, battling unique enemies and bosses. As with most roguelikes, each run offers opportunities to unlock procedural upgrades, creating diverse character builds through a combination of beneficial and detrimental effects.
While a precise release date remains unconfirmed, the Steam page indicates a Q1 2025 launch. Until then, the free demo (offering access to the first floor) and other similar titles like Dead Cells and Hades 2 provide ample entertainment for eager players.
