Emberstoria, Square Enix\'s new Japan-exclusive RPG, launches tomorrow

By JonathanJan 16,2025

Emberstoria, a new mobile strategy RPG from Square Enix, launches in Japan on November 27th. The game, set in a world called Purgatory, features resurrected warriors ("Embers") battling monsters. Pre-downloads are now available.

The game boasts a classic Square Enix style: a dramatic, almost melodramatic storyline, impressive visuals, and a diverse cast of recruitable Embers. Players build their own flying city, Anima Arca, and experience a story voiced by over 40 actors. While a Western release isn't confirmed, anticipation is high.

However, recent news regarding the transfer of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent's operations to NetEase raises questions about Square Enix's mobile strategy. This new release might indicate a shift in their approach.

Whether Emberstoria remains Japan-exclusive or receives a global release (potentially via NetEase) remains uncertain. The path to a global launch, or lack thereof, could reveal much about Square Enix's future mobile game plans. The Japanese mobile game market often features unique titles that don't reach other regions, making Emberstoria's fate a compelling case study.
