Excitement is building as the renowned Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, teeters on the edge of unveiling its inaugural major video game. In a recent chat with Business Insider, CEO Travis Willingham hinted that an announcement could be imminent, possibly "any day."
While specifics about the game's title or its integration into the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham emphasized the dedication of the development team, stating they are "hard at work." He shared insights into the game's interactive nature, suggesting players will have the power to steer the narrative and influence outcomes, not just with beloved characters but also with fresh faces in the world of Exandria.
Willingham, who also stars in Critical Role, co-founded the enterprise with fellow voice acting luminaries such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. From humble beginnings, Critical Role has blossomed into a vast universe of storytelling, most notably with the successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The upcoming video game is envisioned as a complementary project within the Critical Role ecosystem, not directly tied to existing narratives. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham revealed the team's active pursuit of this project, nearing the culmination of years of development. The storyline could either follow one of their existing campaigns or introduce an original tale set in their universe.
Originally, the team anticipated making the announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress into the new year, the wait for news seems to be drawing to a close.
Reflecting on the broader gaming industry, Willingham commented to Rolling Stone about their cautious approach, saying, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. There’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
As of now, no release date has been set for the Critical Role video game. Fans eagerly awaiting more can stay tuned for updates, while also exploring the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
