Buffy Reboot Revived with Gellar's Return

By SophiaFeb 24,2025

Hulu may be bringing Buffy the Vampire Slayer back from the dead. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.

Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.

PlayWhedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.

Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer, with Gellar's potential involvement adding a significant link to the original series.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight vampires and other supernatural creatures. She was aided by her friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series continued through official comic books following the TV series' conclusion, and also spawned the spin-off series, Angel.
