In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the game's conclusion: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate. This decision carries significant weight, potentially leading to companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion decisions.
Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.
Free Orpheus or Side with the Emperor?
This decision hinges on player priorities. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).
After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to after a loss), the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.
Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is assimilated, his knowledge absorbed. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. This grants a combat advantage but might alienate players attached to these companions.
Freeing Orpheus: The Emperor allies with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki, and will even sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers if asked.
In short: choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; choose Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. The Emperor's choice might cause Lae'zel's betrayal and force Karlach's return to Avernus.
The Moral High Ground?
Morality is subjective, but this decision boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful to others. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if influencing the wider world.
The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to becoming a Mind Flayer, but it's a morally upright path. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; careful choices can lead to a satisfying resolution for everyone.
