Balatro's PEGI Rating Reduced to 12
Balatro, the roguelike deckbuilder, has had its PEGI rating revised from 18 to 12. This follows an appeal by the publisher to the ratings board, addressing concerns that initially led to a classification comparable to games like Grand Theft Auto. The developer, Localthunk, announced the change on Twitter.
The initial PEGI 18 rating, deemed overly harsh by many, including the developer, sparked confusion. The game's content, while featuring gambling-related imagery, doesn't involve real-money transactions or betting. Currency is used solely for in-game card purchases.
This isn't Balatro's first brush with regulatory issues. The game was briefly removed from the Nintendo eShop due to concerns about its gambling mechanics, despite the absence of real-world monetary implications. The inconsistent application of these standards is particularly frustrating, as the PEGI 18 rating extended to mobile platforms despite the prevalence of in-app purchases in numerous mobile games.
The controversy largely stemmed from the game's depiction of gambling-related visuals, leading to the initially inappropriate rating. The revised PEGI 12 rating is considered more suitable by many. While the initial misclassification caused setbacks, the correction is a welcome improvement.
