BAFTA, the UK's leading independent arts charity, has recently unveiled what it considers to be the most influential video game of all time, and the result might surprise many. In a public poll conducted by BAFTA, the top spot was claimed by Shenmue, an action-adventure game that first hit the shelves in 1999 for the Dreamcast console. This game, which follows protagonist Ryo Hazuki on his quest for vengeance set against the backdrop of a meticulously detailed open-world representation of Yokosuka in the 1980s, has been lauded for its pioneering approach to game design.
The runner-up spot was taken by the "pioneering first-person shooter" *Doom*, released in 1993, while the classic *Super Mario Bros.* from 1985 secured the bronze. Rounding out the top five are *Half-Life* and *The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time*, both released in 1998.Notably absent from the list are modern hits such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Halo, and Fortnite. The full list of the top 21 most influential games, as voted by the public, includes a diverse range of titles from Minecraft to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 slated for release in 2025.
Yu Suzuki, the creator of Shenmue, expressed his deep honor and gratitude upon learning of the game's recognition. He highlighted the game's original aim to push the boundaries of realism in gaming, a vision that continues to inspire players around the world. Suzuki also teased that the story of Shenmue is far from over, hinting at future developments.
