Ubisoft's latest addition to the renowned stealth-action open-world series, Assassin's Creed Shadows, has finally arrived, sparking discussions on where it stands among its predecessors. With over 30 games under the Assassin's Creed banner, we're focusing on the mainline entries, excluding mobile, side-scrolling, VR, and spin-offs like Bloodlines or Liberation.
The journey began in 2007 with Desmond Miles stepping into the Animus to embody his ancestor Altaïr. Fast forward 18 years, and players now navigate 16th-century Japan with Naoe and Yasuke in what marks the 14th installment of the core series. I've taken the liberty of ranking these games based on my personal enjoyment using an IGN Tier List. Take a peek at my rankings:
For me, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains the pinnacle of the series. Its blend of island exploration, thrilling ship combat, and a vibrant cast creates what I consider the ultimate Assassin's Creed experience. It shares the S-tier with Assassin’s Creed 2, which truly propelled the franchise into the spotlight. Surprisingly, I've placed Valhalla in the A-tier, drawn in by its Viking-inspired combat and the addictive Orlog minigame. Joining it is Unity, whose depiction of French Revolution-era Paris remains visually stunning even after a decade.
If you disagree with my rankings—perhaps you find Valhalla too expansive or believe Assassin’s Creed 2 is overrated—feel free to create your own tier list. Rank the mainline AC games and compare your S, A, B, C, and D tiers with the IGN community.
