A domino set typically consists of 28 tiles (though some variations use more, like double-9 or double-12 sets for games such as Mexican Train and Chicken Foot). Each tile is divided into two square ends, each marked with a number of pips or blank. Different regions have their own popular domino game variations: England (Muggins), Scandinavia (Bergen), Mexico (Mexican Train), and Spain (Matador).

Dominoes originated in Song Dynasty China. They arrived in Italy in the 18th century, though the exact evolution of the game is unclear.

General Domino Rules:

Blocking Games:

The most basic version is a two-player game using a double-six set. Tiles are shuffled and each player draws seven. The remaining tiles are unused. Players can see the number of tiles remaining in other players' hands. The first player plays a tile, starting the line of play. Players take turns adding tiles to matching ends. The game ends when a player uses all their tiles or when the game is blocked. In a blocked game, the player who caused the block loses. Starting tiles vary by game (e.g., highest double in Muggins, 0-0 in Bergen, next lowest double in Mexican Train).

Scoring Games:

Points are awarded for various actions or configurations. Many scoring games use variations of the Draw Game. In Muggins, players aim for open ends that add up to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when open ends match. In Mexican Train, the double-zero tile is worth 50 points. Failure to call "domino" before placing a tile (and another player calling it afterwards) results in the first player drawing an extra tile.

Draw Games:

In Draw games (blocking or scoring), players can draw tiles from the remaining stock before playing. The score is the sum of pips in the losing player's hand and the stock (usually leaving two tiles in the stock). Draw games are often simply called "Dominoes."

Mexican Train is now available! Enjoy this popular variation. Play online (Draw, Block, and Muggins) for free!
