Celebrating Devarattam: A Digital Legacy
This application, a product of my "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" project, honors the rich tradition of Devarattam. I dedicate this app to esteemed figures: Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimamani Mr. K. Nelli Mani Kandhan from Zamin Kodangipatti, recipients of the Kalaimamani, Kalaimamani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards, respectively. My gratitude also extends to my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the cherished legends of Devarattam.
This app serves to promote Devarattam and its distinguished awardees, providing detailed information on both. Devarattam, a vibrant folk dance of Tamil Nadu, boasts a history spanning generations. Historically and presently, the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community has been the primary custodian of this art form. While Devarattam encompasses 32 to 72 steps, 32 constitute the foundational movements, with the remaining steps serving as variations.
Devarattam dancers, adorned with salangai (ankle bells) and holding kerchiefs, gracefully perform the dance to the accompaniment of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument.
