Civilization 7 Dev Firaxis Says 'There's Hope for Gandhi, Yet'

By MilaFeb 27,2025

Civilization 7's release has left many veteran players questioning the absence of a familiar face: Mahatma Gandhi. A staple of the series since its inception in 1991, Gandhi's omission is notable. His absence, however, isn't a sign of neglect, according to Civilization 7 lead designer Ed Beach.

Beach confirmed that Gandhi's return is planned, likely as DLC. He explained that Firaxis has a broader roadmap for adding civilizations, prioritizing a mix of established favorites and fresh additions. The initial Civilization 7 launch intentionally omitted some historically significant civilizations, including Great Britain, to make room for newcomers. (Note: Carthage and Great Britain are slated for release in March 2025 as part of The Crossroads of the World Collection DLC, followed by Bulgaria and Nepal).

Beach cited similar omissions in previous Civilization titles (Mongolia and Persia in Civ 5 or Civ 6) as precedent. The sheer number of popular choices necessitates leaving some out initially. While some players express concern, Beach assures fans that Gandhi's absence is temporary.

Currently, Firaxis is addressing community feedback regarding Civilization 7's mixed Steam reviews. Concerns include the user interface, limited map variety, and the perceived lack of key features at launch. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative reception but expressed confidence in the game's long-term appeal to its core audience, describing its initial performance as "very encouraging."
